FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) draws on ancient philosophies that emphasise
the relationship of humans to the natural world and that consider ill-health to be a
failure of the body's natural harmony with nature.

Traditional concepts such as 'yin', 'yang', 'qi' (vital energy), 'blood' and 'body fluid'
are used to help define the mechanisms of the body and to diagnose the disorders
that create ill-health.

Traditional Chinese Medicine treats symptoms, but its main objective is to treat the
root of any problem so as to eliminate it completely.

COULD TCM HELP YOU?
All forms of ill-health can be understood and treated by Traditional Chinese Medicine
and it can be used, where appropriate, to complement western medicine. Some of
the more common disorders treated include:

  • Muscular-skeletal pain
  • Digestive disorders
  • Gynaecological disorders
  • Skin diseases
  • Psychological problems
  • Insomnia
  • Headache / Migraine
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Immune system disorders
  • Allergies
  • Common cold

WHAT METHODS ARE USED?
Acupuncture and Herbal medicine can be combined to good effect in
the treatment of most diseases.

Acupuncture uses thin, solid needles to stimulate points on meridians through which
the body's vital energy (qi) flows. Each of these points affects the qi flow in a
different way, so that stimulation at the appropriate points enables the body to
return towards harmony, alleviating pain and disease.

Chinese Herbs are usually prescribed as a combination of individual herbs,
specifically selected and formulated to suit the individual and the particular illness.
Herbs can be administered either as a decoction prepared from dried herbs, or as a
powder, capsule, or pill.

HOW LONG WILL TREATMENT TAKE?
Because Traditional Chinese Medicine is concerned with the well-being of the whole
person, great care is taken in diagnosis and a first session will be largely devoted to
tailoring a treatment to a person's specific needs.

Sessions last up to an hour and the number necessary to complete the prescribed
treatment will depend on the severity of the condition, how long it has existed and
the general state of health of the patient.
